Brigadier General Robert H. Milroy in the Civil War   Robert H. Milroy - Early Life Career: Born June 11, 1816, Robert Huston Milroy spent the early part of his life near Salem, IN before moving north to Carroll County, IN.   Interested in pursuing a military career, he attended Captain Alden Partridge’s Military Academy in Norwich, VT.   A strong student, Milroy graduated first in the Class of 1843.   Moving to Texas two years later, he then returned home to Indiana with the beginning of the Mexican-American War.   Possessing military training, Milroy earned a commission as a captain in the 1st Indiana Volunteers.   Traveling to Mexico, the regiment participated in patrol and guard duty before their enlistments expired in 1847.   Seeking a new profession, Milroy attended law school at Indiana University and graduated in 1850.   Moving to Rensselaer in northwest Indiana, he commenced a career as a lawyer and eventually became a local judge. Milroy - The Civil War Begins: Recruiting a company for the 9th Indiana Militia in the fall of 1860, Milroy became its captain.   Following the attack on Fort Sumter and beginning of the Civil War, his status quickly changed.   On April 27, 1861, Milroy entered federal service as colonel of the 9th Indiana Volunteers.   This regiment moved to Ohio where it joined Major General George B. McClellans forces which were preparing for a campaign in western Virginia.   Advancing, McClellan sought to protect the vital Baltimore Ohio Railroad as well as open a possible line of advance against Richmond.   On June 3, Milroys men took part in the victory at the Battle of Philippi as Union forces sought to reclaim railroad bridges in western Virginia.   The following month, the 9th Indiana returned to action during the fighting at Rich Mountain and Laurel Hill. Robert H. Milroy - Shenandoah: Continuing to serve in western Virginia, Milroy led his regiment when Union troops defeated General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Cheat Mountain on September 12-15.   Recognized for his effective performances, he received a promotion to brigadier general which was dated to September 3.   Ordered to  Major General John C. Frà ©monts Mountain Department, Milroy assumed command of the Cheat Mountain District.   In the spring of 1862, he took the field as a brigade commander as Union forces sought to defeat Major General Thomas Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley.   Having been beaten at the First Battle of Kernstown in March, Jackson withdrew up (south) the valley and received reinforcements.   Pursued by Major General Nathaniel Banks and threatened by  Frà ©mont who was advancing from the west, Jackson moved to prevent the two Union columns from uniting.   Commanding the lead elements of Frà ©monts army, Milroy learned that Jacksons larger force was moving against him.   Withdrawing over Shenandoah Mountain to McDowell, he was reinforced by Brigadier General Robert Schenck. This combined force unsuccessfully attacked Jackson at the Battle of McDowell on May 8 before retreating north to Franklin.   Joining with Frà ©mont, Milroys brigade fought at Cross Keys on June 8 where it was defeated by Jacksons subordinate, Major General Richard Ewell.   Later summer, Milroy received orders to bring his brigade east for service in Major General John Popes Army of Virginia.   Attached to Major General Franz Sigels corps, Milroy mounted multiple attacks against Jacksons lines during the Second Battle of Manassas.    Robert H. Milroy - Gettysburg Western Service: Returning to western Virginia, Milroy became known for his harsh policies toward Confederate civilians.   That December, he occupied Winchester, VA under the belief the it was critical for the protection of the Baltimore Ohio Railroad.   In February 1863, he assumed command of the 2nd Division, VIII Corps and received a promotion to major general the following month.   Though Union general-in-chief Major General Henry W. Halleck did not favor the advanced position at Winchester, Milroys superior, Schenck, did not order him to withdraw closer to the railroad.   That June, as Lee moved north to invade Pennsylvania, Milroy and his 6,900-man garrison, held at Winchester in the belief that the towns fortifications would deter any attack.   This proved incorrect and on June 13-15, he was driven from the town with heavy losses by Ewell.   Retreating towards Martinsburg, the battle cost Milroy 3,400 men and all of his artillery.    Removed from command, Milroy faced a court of inquiry over his actions at Winchester.   This ultimately found him innocent of any wrongdoing during the defeat.   Ordered west in the spring 1864, he arrived at Nashville where he commenced recruiting duties for Major General George H. Thomas Army of the Cumberland.   He later assumed command of the defenses along the Nashville Chattanooga Railroad.   In this capacity, he led Union troops to victory at the  Third Battle of Murfreesboro that December.   Effective in the field, Milroys performance was later complimented by his superior, Major General  Lovell Rousseau.   Remaining in the west for the rest of the war, Milroy later resigned his commission on July 26, 1865. Robert H. Milroy - Later Life: Returning home to Indiana, Milroy served as a trustee of the Wabash Erie Canal Company before accepting the post of superintendent of Indian Affairs in the Washington Territory in 1872.   Leaving this position three years later, he remained in the Pacific Northwest as an Indian agent for a decade.   Milroy died in Olympia, WA on March 29, 1890, and was buried at  Masonic Memorial Park in Tumwater, WA. An Inspector Calls was one of these, and is about a wealthy upper-middle class family, the Birlings, and how their views on living change as a result of a visit from an inspector. The main characters are the Birlings, Inspector Goole and Eva Smith. Arthur Birling is a successful businessman; his wife, Sybil, is very pretentious; and their rather peculiar son, Eric, is an alcoholic. Erics sister, Sheila, has recently engaged to Gerald Croft, a gentleman of a slightly higher social class than the Birlings Mr. Birling feels a little inferior because of this. We do not know a lot about the Inspector he is given an air of mystery and importance but it is possible that he could be an apparition of some kind or perhaps a figure to represent Priestleys own views. Eva Smith is an absent character who nevertheless plays a huge part in the storyline. The play takes place solely in the dining room of the Birlings house, which is heavily comfortable but not homelike. This unified setting is beneficial in many ways. One thing is that it lowers the costs and requirements of the production of the play, meaning that it can be performed in a wider variety of settings and therefore be shown to more people. In addition, the audience will focus on the actors and the plot rather than the set so much if it does not keep changing, which helps retain attention to the play. The play begins as Gerald Croft and the Birlings are celebrating as a family Sheila Birling and Geralds engagement, when the evening is interrupted by the arrival of Inspector Goole. The Inspector tells them the story of the tragic suicide of a young girl, whose name is Eva Smith, but she calls herself Daisy Renton after Mr. Birling sacks her, as an attempt to make a fresh start. He forces them to see how each of the people present contributed to her taking her own life by swallowing disinfectant. Gradually, he picks away at the protective, self-satisfied shell that the Birlings have built up around themselves, and eventually manages to pull apart the whole sense of the family. He then exits, leaving them to blame each other and argue amongst themselves. The play was written in 1945 but is set in 1912. I think this is to emphasise the point that rich people are not always right, as Mr. Birling in particular makes several predictions that we, as the audience, know to be incorrect. For example, he says, Youll hear some people say that wars inevitable. And to that I say fiddlesticks! and There isnt a chance of war. However, we know that two years later, WWI began. He speculates about Sheila and Geralds future In twenty or thirty years time lets say, in 1940 you may be giving a little party like this your son or daughter might be getting engaged and I tell you, by that time youll be living in a world thatll have forgotten all these silly war scares. This is ironic because in fact in 1940 WWII took place. He also makes predictions about labour struggles when he says, theres a lot of wild talk about possible labour trouble in the near future. Dont worry. Weve passed the worst of it, and the Titanic, as he says, Unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable, both of which we know are wrong. Mr. Birling is confident about all of these predictions, but we know how wrong he is. This is an example of dramatic irony, and I think J.B. Priestley used it to great effect in portraying Mr. Birling as someone who is entirely ignorant about what the future holds, though the other characters are unaware of this. In Act One, the family is celebrating the engagement of Sheila and Gerald. Sheila is presented as excitable and eager to please her family and Gerald: after she has received her ring she says, (excited) Oh its wonderful! Look Mummy isnt it a beauty? Oh darling (She kisses Gerald hastily.) She is also rather materialistic, as the stage directions, (still admiring her ring) imply, though she still shows empathy and compassion towards Eva SHEILA: (Rather distressed) Sorry! Its just that I cant help thinking about that girl destroying herself so horribly.  She plays up to Gerald, saying, Oh is it the one you wanted me to have? and I think this suggests that she wants to keep on everyones good side, and avoid any conflict. In other words if something is wrong, those that have the ability to take action, have the responsibility to take action. Technology! Yes, it has its positives, but like all other things is also has its negatives. Would we really need hover cars? They would still congest ?air space?. At this very moment the Earth is warming up and we are the cause. The warming of the Earth is known more commonly as global warming. Maybe this subject is going to be fought over for centuries while we squander the time we have left away, but even if we did stop doing the things that cause global warming it will not bring it to a standstill. He's a young man who has proved his military brilliance – so I am told – and who is the idol of his men. Quite a romantic career. The stories they tell of him are no doubt half lies, but even so it makes him out to be a type of wonder man.† â€Å"Who are the ‘they'?† demanded the second man. â€Å"The crew of the captured ship. Look, I have all their statements recorded on micro-film, which I have in a secure place. Later on, if you wish, you can see them. You can talk to the men yourselves, if you think it necessary. I've told you the essentials.† â€Å"How did you get it out of them? How do you know they're telling the truth?† Forell frowned. â€Å"I wasn't gentle, good sir. I knocked them about, drugged them crazy, and used the Probe unmercifully. They talked. You can believe them.† â€Å"In the old days,† said the third man, with sudden irrelevance, â€Å"they would have used pure psychology. Painless, you know, but very sure. No chance of deceit.† â€Å"Well, there is a good deal they had in the old days,† said Forell, dryly. â€Å"These are the new days.† â€Å"But,† said the fourth man, â€Å"what did he want here, this general, this romantic wonder-man?† There was a dogged, weary persistence about him. That alone would assure us that his real motives are such as it would not benefit him to have us know. Combine the nature of his profession with the fact that the Empire has already subsidized one attack upon us in my father's time, and the possibilities become ominous. That first attack failed. I doubt that the Empire owes us love for that.† â€Å"There is nothing in your findings,† questioned the fourth man guardedly, â€Å"that makes for certainty? You are withholding nothing?† Forell answered levelly, â€Å"I can't withhold anything. From here on there can be no question of business rivalry. Unity is forced upon us.† â€Å"Patriotism?† There was a sneer in the third man's thin voice. â€Å"Patriotism be damned,† said Forell quietly. â€Å"Do you think I give two puffs of nuclear emanation for the future Second Empire? Do you think I'd risk a single Trade mission to smooth its path? But – do you suppose Imperial conquest will help my business or yours? If the Empire wins, there will be a sufficient number of yearning carrion crows to crave the rewards of battle.† â€Å"And we're the rewards,† added the fourth man, dryly. The second man broke his silence suddenly, and shifted his bulk angrily, so that the chair creaked under him. â€Å"But why talk of that. The Empire can't win, can it? There is Seldon's assurance that we will form the Second Empire in the end. This is only another crisis. There have been three before this.† â€Å"Only another crisis, yes!† Forell brooded. â€Å"But – in the case of the first two, we had Salvor Hardin to guide us; in the third, there was Hober Mallow. Whom have we now?† He looked at the others somberly and continued, â€Å"Seldon's rules of psychohistory on which it is so comforting to rely probably have as one of the contributing variables, a certain normal initiative on the part of the people of the Foundation themselves. Seldon's laws help those who help themselves.† â€Å"The times make the man,† said the third man. â€Å"There's another proverb for you.† â€Å"You can't count on that, not with absolute assurance,† grunted Forell. â€Å"Now the way it seems to me is this. If this is the fourth crisis, then Seldon has foreseen it. If he has, then it can be beaten, and there should be a way of doing it. â€Å"Now The Empire is stronger than we; it always has been. But this is the first time we are in danger of its direct attack, so that strength becomes terribly menacing. If it can be beaten, it must be once again as in all past crises by a method other than pure force. We must find the weak side of our enemy and attack it there.† â€Å"And what is that weak side?† asked the fourth man. â€Å"Do you intend advancing a theory?† â€Å"No. That is the point I'm leading up to. Our great leaders of the past always saw the weak points of their enemies and aimed at that. But now-â€Å" There was a helplessness in his voice, and for a moment none volunteered a comment. Then the fourth man said, â€Å"We need spies.† Forell turned to him eagerly. â€Å"Right! I don't know when the Empire will attack.
